Can winter tulips treat your winter blues?

While the fields rest under frost and snow, many flower farmers rest and regroup for what spring will bring. Here at Hannacroix Hill Farm winter is a different kind of season. It is one fueled by intention to deliver something bright when it is needed most. Each winter we grow thousands of specialty tulips indoors to bring clean, locally grown blooms to life between January and April that include bold Triumph varieties, lush double blooms that resemble roses and peonies, fancy fringed petals, and ruffled parrot tulips in colors that span the full spectrum.

At Hannacroix Hill Farm, we believe winter doesn’t have to be a season without flowers and that matters because flowers have the power to change how a season feels.

For many people, the long stretch of gray days can take a real toll. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a reality, and even those who don’t experience it clinically often feel the emotional weight of shorter days and limited sunlight. Fresh flowers offer more than beauty; they offer a burst of vibrance and hope.  Studies show they can trigger biochemical responses that support happiness and help ease feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. A bouquet of tulips on a kitchen table or desk becomes a quiet form of self-care, one that doesn’t require extra time, effort, or explanation.

Flowers also have a remarkable impact on focus and creativity. I can attest to this experience firsthand. In addition to running Hannacroix Hill Farm, I work full-time in a high-pressure corporate role, spending long hours at a desk. For years, I have made it a priority to keep fresh flowers nearby. The benefit is simple as they offer me a moment to pause, encourage me to take a deep breath, and reset to move forward with the tasks ahead.

While you may not be impacted by SAD or a high-stress environment, there is also a broader impact to consider. Choosing locally grown winter tulips is a meaningful alternative to imported flowers, which are often over a week old before they reach your home, treated heavily with pesticides to meet international shipping requirements, and transported thousands of miles. Just as a farm-fresh tomato tastes better, locally grown flowers offer unmatched freshness and longevity, without the environmental cost.

We are proud to be New York Grown & Certified farm. From bulb to bloom, our winter tulips are grown right here in New York. Our bulbs are sourced from Ampersand Bulb Co., a New York based supplier, and our soil-forced bulbs are grown in soil that comes from McEnroe Organic Farm, a certified organic operation in the Hudson Valley. Our flowers are clean, thoughtfully grown, and 100% free from chemical applications.

If you’re craving a hint of spring this winter, there’s no need to travel south. Sometimes, all it takes is a bouquet of fresh winter tulips to make the present moment a little brighter and remind you what’s coming.  Until the season changes, our winter tulips are here for you!
